How to remove water from hydrogen chloride gas

Water is a common impurity in hydrogen chloride gas, and its presence can cause serious problems in industrial processes. Moist hydrogen chloride is highly corrosive, leading to damage to equipment and pipelines. It can also contaminate products and reduce process efficiency.

There are several methods for removing water from hydrogen chloride gas, depending on the required purity level:

1. Concentrated Sulfuric Acid Drying: The most common method, where hydrogen chloride gas is passed through concentrated sulfuric acid, which absorbs water. This method can achieve a dew point of -40°C to -50°C.

2. Molecular Sieve Drying: Used for higher purity requirements, molecular sieves can remove water to very low levels (dew point below -70°C). However, molecular sieves can react with hydrogen chloride, so special types must be used.

3. Low-Temperature Condensation: The gas is cooled to below the dew point of water, causing water vapor to condense and separate. This method is often used in combination with other drying methods.

4. Membrane Separation: A newer technology that uses selective membranes to separate water from hydrogen chloride gas.

Problem-Solving Case: A chemical company in Zhejiang was experiencing severe corrosion issues in their HCl pipeline system, leading to frequent shutdowns and maintenance.
