Propane (C₃H₈) is the third member of the alkane series with stable chemical properties under normal temperature and pressure. It is colorless, odorless, heavier than air, and slightly soluble in water, easily soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and ether.
Propane has excellent combustion performance with high calorific value (50.4 MJ/kg) and clean combustion products. It is chemically inert at room temperature and does not react with common strong acids, strong alkalis and oxidants. Under high temperature, high pressure or catalytic conditions, it can undergo oxidation, substitution and pyrolysis reactions, which is an important raw material for organic chemical synthesis.
